The Two Sergeants Instants Before the Aggressor Got Stunned

One police sergeant who jumped to the help of a partner that was assaulted by a blade-wielder was granted the Royal Recognition for Valor.

Sergeant Tim Ansell fought with 27-yr-old Jacob Brown after he held a blade to the throat of his colleague Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown initiated the assault as the officers and their third officer, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were conversing to a motorist following a road collision in Whalley Range in summer 2023.

Brown stabbed and slashed both Sergeant Ansell and Sergeant Foster prior to Police Constable Wolstencroft stopped him with a Taser.

"Officer attacked," the officer could be heard saying over his radio.

Officer-mounted and vehicle camera recording shared by the force depicted Brown, wearing in black with a hood up, run up to Sgt Foster from behind with a weapon extended.

He ran into the officer who lost balance and dropped to the ground, before Sgt Ansell intervened and struggled to restrain him to the pavement despite being continually attacked with the knife.

Police Constable Wolstencroft Stopped the Assailant, Jacob Brown, with a Taser

PC Wolstencroft deployed his electric weapon and awaited a clear shot, concluding the struggle to an finish.

Sgt Ansell stated audibly: "Can I get assistance on my neck now, I got knifed in the neck."

Sgt Ansell sustained multiple lacerations to his neck and further injuries to his limbs and body, while Sergeant Foster experienced cut injuries.

The department reported Sergeant Foster utilized his palms to stem his colleague's bleeding before paramedics reached the scene.

The new recognition follows subsequent to the law enforcement team received internal Valor Recognitions in October 2023 and the John Egerton Bravery Award from the local Police Federation in April 2024.

They further earned a Regional Courage Honor in mid-2024.

"The responses of all three officers eventually saved themselves and ensured no civilians suffered any wounds."

Brown was sentenced to an psychiatric detention in spring 2024, as stated by the department.
