European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
