Peace Deal Provides Respite to Gaza, But Fears Remain Over Tomorrow

On Thursday morning, there was scant happiness in Gaza. The news of the pending peace agreement had spread rapidly throughout the war-torn region throughout the evening, marked by occasional shots fired into the sky in celebration, yet with the arrival of dawn the sentiment shifted to nervous expectation.

“Fear continues to grip everyone,” said a 26-year-old woman located in al-Mawasi, the cramped and unsanitary shoreline zone in which a large portion of residents are residing in makeshift tents and vinyl dwellings.

“We look forward to a public statement along with concrete assurances to reopen the border passages, allowing food deliveries, and halting the violence, devastation and forced relocations.”

In the vicinity, an elderly resident Abbas Hassouna said he and his family were hoping for an official announcement and dependable pledges for border access, ensuring food arrives, and stopping the killing, demolition and eviction”.

“When we see these things happen, at that point we will fully accept them. However currently, apprehension persists. They could backtrack suddenly or dishonor the deal like previous instances stranding us amid the continuous pattern devoid of progress except more suffering,” Hassouna expressed, who is from northern Gaza but has been displaced on multiple occasions.

Conflicting Feelings Among Locals

A middle-aged resident Ola al-Nazli explained she heard of the ceasefire through her neighbors in al-Mawasi. “I was uncertain how to feel, whether to be happy or sad. We’ve lived through comparable events on numerous prior occasions, and every instance we were disappointed again, consequently this occasion apprehension and wariness have intensified,” Nazli stated, who had to abandon her residence in Gaza City because of the recent armed conflict in that area.

“All residents exist in tents that fail to safeguard against low temperatures or from the bombing. Individuals with savings or occupations were stripped of all assets. That is why our happiness is mixed with pain and fear. I simply desire that we might exist in safety, without explosive noises, avoiding displacement, and that access points will open soon,” Nazli concluded.

Relief Preparations In Progress

Humanitarian organizations stated they were organizing to “flood” Gaza with food and necessary items. The comprehensive proposal ensures a boost to aid delivery. The head of WHO, the WHO director, explained his team was prepared to “scale up its work to respond to urgent healthcare demands of patients across Gaza, and facilitate reconstruction of the devastated medical infrastructure”.

The United Nations organization for Palestinian refugees, applauded the arrangement as major respite, and stated it maintained sufficient food reserves beyond the territory to provide for the war-torn area’s 2.3m population for the coming three months. While increased support has reached Gaza during previous days, supplies continue to be severely inadequate, humanitarian workers said.

Relief and Concern Throughout Relocated Individuals

A man named Jihad al-Hilu received information about the peace agreement via radio broadcast while residing in his temporary dwelling located in the al-Mawasi area. “At that moment, I felt a mix of happiness and comfort, similar to a spark of hope reentered my soul subsequent to prolonged anticipation. We desperately wanted this moment, for violence to cease and for the slaughter that have broken so many homes to conclude,” Hilu in his thirties explained.

“Concurrently, there is a great fear residing inside us. We are concerned that this ceasefire could be short-lived and that conflict could return like earlier instances.”

Additionally exist general worries about what peace may bring to Gaza, where more than 90% of residences have been damaged or destroyed, virtually all public works destroyed and where many people goes hungry every day. Approximately 67,000 individuals overwhelmingly ordinary citizens have perished amid armed conflict commenced after of the Hamas raid during late 2023, that resulted in 1,200 deaths also primarily non-combatants with 251 individuals captured by combatants.

“What worries me above all else is the deficiency of protection. Starvation is tolerable, yet insecurity is the real disaster. I fear that the territory might become an area of disorder controlled by criminal groups and armed factions rather than proper governance.”

Present Conditions

Local sources indicated Israeli forces fired tank shells to deter residents returning to northern parts of the territory on Thursday morning but reported no sounds of fighting or air attacks.

A resident named Nadra Hamadeh, her sibling, brother-in-law, two nieces and son in law were killed in the war, expressed her desire to return from al-Mawasi to Gaza’s northern part as soon as possible to inspect her residence, that she thinks to be damaged yet remains standing.

“I feel profound sadness for people who sacrificed their families and children and properties … Concerning our case, we look forward to returning to our home which we had to evacuate. The sensation persists similar to our essences had been separated from our physical forms during our departure,” Hamadeh, 57 said.

“We desire that hostilities cease,
