Tropical Cyclone Matmo Struck Southern China Causing Massive Evacuations

Typhoon Matmo struck the coast on the coastal regions of China on Sunday afternoon, following its sweeping across the island province of Hainan. The intense weather forced the relocation of around 350,000 people, bringing torrential rain and damaging winds, especially between Wuchuan in Guangdong and Hainan's Wenchang. Boat transport were suspended and air travel disrupted at Haikou Meilan airport.

Storm Details

The typhoon, this year's 21st cyclone of the year, recorded wind speeds of 94mph and dumped over 50mm of rainfall in a short period in Chongzou and Qinzhou. The city of the region also experienced high rainfall totals.

Matmo triggered China's top-tier emergency warning, with disruptions in the city, where commercial activities, transport links and highways were closed. In the special administrative region, 100 flights were impacted and dozens called off.

Future Projections

As Matmo advances inward towards the provincial area in the neighboring country, it is expected to diminish into a less intense system with 55mph winds but will persist to bring heavy rainfall. Vietnam's northern regions could experience 130-150mm on Monday, increasing the threat of flooding and landslides. The system is anticipated to move towards Yunnan province in China, where further heavy rainfall is likely.

Global Weather Events

Meanwhile, a hurricane named Priscilla developed off Mexico's Pacific coast on Saturday night, first as a tropical storm. It led to a weather alert for south-western regions from a coastal point to Punta Mita on the start of the week.

In the early hours of Sunday, the hurricane was about 491 kilometers from Cabo Corrientes with continuous gusts of 105km/h. It intensified into a hurricane in the evening, when sustained winds peaked at 121km/h.

Though not expected to hit the coast, Priscilla is likely to generate dangerous waves and rip currents as it tracks north-west along the coast towards a Mexican state. Heavy rainfall is predicted on Monday, reaching 100-150mm in MichoacƔn and western Guerrero, with some areas at about 200mm. Other regions could receive moderate to heavy rain.

In other parts, a cyclone named Shakhti has developed as the initial post-season cyclonic storm of 2025 in the a body of water, prompting an warning from the India Meteorological Department for an Indian state. On that day, the cyclone was 209 kilometers southeast of a location in Oman with peak wind speeds of 103km/h.

Shakhti, which has moved south-westward and lost strength, is forecast to recurve towards the east into the the sea. Rough seas are expected to continue along the coastal stretch and heavy rainfall is anticipated in coastal districts including Dwarka, Jamnagar and Surat.
